NC Medical Board - Seeking Expert Medical Reviewers

The NC Medical Board is seeking to grow their list of very well-qualified, experienced, board-certified cardiologists and cardiac surgeons  across the state willing to provide the occasional outside expert quality of care review for the Board. Most of the reviewers only evaluate between one to three cases a year, perhaps a few more if their specialty areas are in high demand.

While as a regulatory agency, the NC Medical Board cannot match the hourly rates our most well-qualified experts command for trial work, serving as a Board expert does not require nearly the same time commitment. The average review takes between one to five hours (depending on case complexity), the expert is only reviewing the standard of care for the subject treatment and not negligence, causation, prognosis or damages, and we provide bookmarked PDF records and a very straightforward worksheet. Most cases do not go to a public hearing. Not only is being an approved Board outside reviewer a top-notch trial expert credential, but it is also a very meaningful way to serve the profession.

Below is the link to the “Medical Reviews” FAQ from the NCMB website, which also includes a link to the Reviewer Manual (that also includes a FAQ).

If you are interested in being added to the Board’s list of approved outside expert reviewers, contact Lynne DeVenny, NCCP for more information. Board experts can be retired or semi-retired as long as they have provided the subject care in their specialty areas within two (2) years of evaluating a Board case. Obviously if a licensee is in the same city or hospital system as a potential expert, then we have look in other parts of the state for that particular case to avoid potential conflicts of interest.
